Retired RI Police Captain Pens Safety Book For Children
Rory Stays Safe is a book featuring a cartoon bunny that learns what to do when approached by dangerous strangers.

/Rhode Island News Articles/ - PROVIDENCE, RI, May 21, 2007 - Timothy Colgan, a retired Warwick, R.I. police captain, wrote Rory Stays Safe, an educational cartoon book from Staying Safe Stories, after many nights of telling his children fictional stories about topics like dealing with strangers and how to say no.

Captain Colgan modeled Rory Stays Safe after his bedtime stories to his own children, now 21 and 26. Rory Stays Safe is a fictional book about a young bunny learning what to do when approached by strangers. Rory is approached by a stranger who asks him uncomfortable questions. He remembers that his mother told him not to be scared, just to be very careful. Rory listens to his mother's advice and wards off the stranger.

Captain Colgan has had extensive experience in dealing with pedophiles and child predators and knows that teaching children how to stay safe from dangerous strangers is a difficult topic to approach. "Many parents are uncomfortable alerting their children to the very real dangers that exist. Parents use all kinds of books to teach their children, why not use one to teach something that is hard to talk about?" says Captain Colgan.

Captain Colgan's experience includes receiving more than fifteen commendations during his years on the police force. Some of his commendations stem from his involvement in investigating, arresting, and obtaining a confession from a serial killer who had murdered four people, including two children, arresting an escapee from a maximum-security prison, and negotiating with an armed homicidal/suicidal man who had fired several shots at officers. Captain Colgan is also featured for his exceptional police work in Denise Lang's New York Times bestseller, "A Call for Justice".
